The liver has many important functions. It detoxifies harmful substances, purifies your blood, manufactures vital nutrients, and helps with blood clotting.
Cancer that starts in the tissues of the liver is called primary liver cancer. The most common type of primary liver cancer is hepatocellular carcinoma, which arises from the liver cells themselves (hepatocytes). Another type, cholangiocarcinomas, is cancer that starts in the cells of the small tubes (bile ducts) of the liver. Angiosarcomas and hemangiosarcomas are rare forms of liver cancer that begin in the blood vessels of the liver and grow quickly. Hepatoblastoma is a rare type of liver cancer that develops in very young children.
More commonly, liver cancer is secondary, or metastatic. This means the cancer found in the liver did not start there, but spread (metastasized) to the liver from another part of the body, such as the colon, lungs, or breasts. In this case, it is named for the organ or tissue in which the cancer began (e.g., metastatic lung cancer to the liver).
Symptoms

Alcohol - You may need to eliminate alcoholic beverages if you have liver cancer. MayoClinic.com recommends that if you have cirrhosis, then cutting out alcohol may help minimize damage to the liver. According to the University of Maryland, cirrhosis is a condition of gradual liver function damage that triggers many symptoms similar to liver cancer, including fatigue, weight and appetite loss, and nausea.

Foods high in salt - Foods high in salt may worsen damage to the liver or trigger symptoms in people with liver damage. According to MedlinePlus, salt can aggravate fluid buildup and swelling in your liver since it causes the body to hold onto water. MedlinePlus advises that most people with some type of liver damage limit their salt consumption. Foods high in salt include canned soups and pastas, frozen dinners, packaged chips and commercially baked goods such as cookies, pies and cakes.

Foods high in protein - Proteins are important for preventing liver damage and the accumulation of fats in the body. However, proteins may not be processed normally if you have liver disease or other liver damage, according to MedlinePlus. Proteins that are improperly processed can lead to a buildup of toxic waste products in your body and worsen liver damage or trigger symptoms. MedlinePlus recommends that you consume 1 gram of protein per kilogram of your body weight in order to receive adequate protein. Foods high in protein include animal sources such as poultry, meat, eggs, fish, and dairy products. You may need to limit these food sources or consume them in moderation.
